We propose two recent techniques to cope with traumatic experiences. The first gives us a way out of emotional stress and the second, to overcome ourselves with work and will.

A way out of the pain

The EMDR synthesizes, it is the newest treatment that is applied for “Post Traumatic Stress Disorder”. It allows overcoming psychological trauma through a significantly shorter time than traditional psychological therapies. The psychologist Delia Marta Medici assures that “this technique provides wonderful speed in the treatment of traumatic situations, such as abuse, rape or accidents” and clarifies that “the patient does not forget the incident, but achieves a distance from the negative emotional charge”.

This complex psychotherapy combines theoretical concepts of other successful therapies – such as behavioral and humanistic – with physical stimulation of the brain, through eye movements, color, and sound management. This is not magic, but a serious technique and highly studied by professionals to overcome the most difficult facts effectively.

Field of action

This treatment developed a little over two decades ago, is applied with proven success in trauma associated with victims of violence, rape, terrorism, kidnapping, natural catastrophes, and accidents; but psychological trauma is not only due to extraordinary causes. For this reason, the EMDR technique can also be applied in other types of situations: the loss of loved ones; addiction work, sentimental or material disappointments, and even phobias.

As it happens in almost all the successful psychological therapies, aspects of the EMDR technique are used in other treatments, such as Coaching, stress treatment, and Counseling, thus expanding its multiple applications: overcoming trauma in individual therapy, fear of speaking in public, depression, performance enhancement, whether at work, in sports or in artistic expressions. It is about healing the wounds that are blocking our way to happiness.

Work with your resources

Counseling is another technique that relies on the patient’s health and has as its fundamental objective personal change and development. It is characterized by giving advice, guidance, and accompaniment to people in crisis or conflict situations, to help them find the meaning of their own life, a very necessary aspect that allows them to enhance their own happiness.

Your capital

This trend focuses especially on what we have, on our capital, and not on what we lack. It is based on the innate capacity of the human being to find for himself the necessary resources to live his life in the best possible way. This natural tendency to grow can be deployed from the encounter with another person (in this case, the Counselling professional) capable of establishing a bond that is characterized by the absence of threat and by the presence of empathy, acceptance, and authenticity.

So, the Counsellor who has been trained in this orientation, in addition to his theoretical and technical training, is deeply trained in the understanding and incorporation of these facilitating attitudes that create the conditions for personal growth to occur.

Regarding its practical area of action, this therapy mainly contains people who come for individual or family problems. The Counsellor advises in cases of divorce, bereavement, family conflicts, fundamental decision making, or life crises (such as menopause, old age, widowhood, empty nest syndrome, etc.). On the other hand, it also incorporates those who consult for conflicts related to the labor or institutional spheres, such as the prevention of organizational conflicts, human development planning and training, the selection of personnel and their processes, and even the development of the potential of leadership.

For this growth process to begin, we need to satisfy basic needs that range from food, protection, and love to being taken into account. Only then can we take off, and it is on this path that the Counsellor starts us. We could say that Counselling is the place where one can feel safe to run one of life’s great risks, to be “ourselves”.
